Merino wool is much softer than traditional sheep’s wool, so most people can wear it directly against the skin. Whether wool feels pleasant to the touch depends mainly on the thickness of the fibre, measured in microns.

Merino is known for its fine, flexible fibres, which usually range from 15 to 24 microns. By comparison, traditional sheep’s wool can have much thicker fibres, sometimes over 40 microns. The lower the micron count, the finer the fibre and the more easily it bends under pressure from the skin instead of irritating it. Fibres below 20 microns are especially valued for their softness and lack of the typical “itchy” feel.

Our merino wool is most often 19.5 microns, which makes it soft, gentle and very comfortable to wear. You can find information about fibre thickness on each product page.

Our colour names are standardised. If two products have the same colour name, it means they were made from yarn in the same shade, so you can confidently wear them together.

Pilling is a natural part of wearing knitted wool. It occurs when looser fibres and surface hairs form small balls due to friction.

How quickly a product starts to pill depends mainly on the type of yarn, the length of the surface fibres and how the product is used. The areas most prone to pilling are those that rub against other surfaces, such as the sides, underarms, cuffs and places that come into contact with a bag or backpack.

If pilling occurs, simply remove the small balls regularly with a fabric shaver. After a few gentle treatments, the surface of the knit usually stabilises.

You can find detailed information about pilling resistance in the description of each product. Products made from classic smooth wool with no visible surface hair are the least prone to pilling. The longer the fibres, the greater the tendency to pill.

Merino wool does not need to be washed frequently. In most cases, airing it is enough because wool naturally limits the build-up of unpleasant odours.

If the product needs washing, always check the care label. It will tell you whether the item can be machine-washed or should only be washed by hand. Use lukewarm water at a maximum temperature of 30°C and a mild wool detergent. Do not tumble dry. After washing, lay the product flat and leave it to dry.

Yes, most people can wear merino wool directly against the skin. Its fibres are finer and more flexible than those of traditional, coarser wool, so it does not usually cause the typical itchy sensation.

However, sensitivity to fabrics is individual. If you have very sensitive skin, start by wearing the product for a shorter period and see how your skin reacts.

Mulesing is a practice used on some sheep farms that involves removing sections of skin around a lamb’s tail, usually to reduce the risk of flystrike. It is a painful and controversial procedure from an animal-welfare perspective.

Mulesing-free means that the wool comes from farms that do not use this practice. In the case of our wool, the absence of mulesing and other harmful practices towards animals is confirmed by the RWS certification, the Responsible Wool Standard.

This independent standard monitors sheep welfare, land management and the flow of certified wool throughout the entire production chain.
